Greek Literature This book reviews the origins and spread of the major literary genres of ancient Greece, in which they attained a degree of perfection seldom rivalled afterwards. It studies their evolution and that of Greek thought from Antiquity to the first centuries of our own era. Because Greek literature is not confined to the time of Pericles. It is a product of the heroic age, of the ages of Athenian democracy, of the Hellenistic kingdoms and of the Roman Empire. But it is to be found in equal measure at the dawn of our own time, when drama, poetry, history, and philosophy often echo it. Thus this history of Greek literature is not only a history of Greece and its civilization but also a contribution to our understanding of our own culture. The Author Alain Billault is professor of Greek at the University of Lyon-III-Jean-Moulin. His work concerns post-classical Greek literature. He has published The Romanesque Creation in the Greek Literature of the Imperial Period (Paris, PUF, 1991).
