In 1943, Australian Flight Lieutenant James "Jimmy" Adams boarded his Avro Lancaster for a routine bombing mission that ended in the crew bailing out into enemy territory. Adams found himself in a top-secret facility. The Germans considered him a promising test subject for their experimental program, the source of the Haunebu, a saucer-shaped craft powered by electromagnetic fields and anti-gravity technology. The project aimed to create the ultimate flying machine, capable of exceptional speed and control. In this speculative history, the Haunebu carried the Nazis to the Moon in 1944, long before Apollo. When the war ended the following year, Allied forces began recruiting German scientists for research programs through Operation Paperclip. Adams eventually returned to Australia and settled in South Australia where he flew Red Cross missions, while the war's unsettling moral compromises lingered in his mind. After the war, a secret Allied program at Woomera grew out of the Haunebu research. By the 1950s, it transcended NASA's goals, sending missions toward Jupiter's moons, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, in search of water ice and valuable minerals. Subsequently, the program, known as Project Erebus, pushed deep into the outer solar system. Among its crew was Adams's daughter, Barbara, an astrophysicist. Environmental dangers resulting from cosmic radiation claimed one life after another. Barbara somehow made it home, but survival came at a cost. Operatives working for the CIA swept her achievement under the carpet by forcing her into silence.
