Alongside other media, cinema in particular has fuelled stereotypical perceptions of the country and its people, and firmly entrenched the East-West divide in the collective memory. Nevertheless, time and again, directors have tackled this subject in their films with a touch of irony, attempting to counter these very stereotypes by playing on them - even during the Cold War. Three of these films are examined in more detail in this paper and analysed with regard to the stereotypes they portray.
