Historic Buildings and Houses of Mason, Texas

In 1986 the Mason County Historical Commission published Mason County Communities. The original book contained the most complete accounts of many of the rural communities as well as detailed histories of the buildings around the courthouse square and the nineteenth century houses in the town of Mason. By 2021 almost all the copies had sold. After much discussion, the Mason County Historical Commission decided to update the book and release a completely new edition: Historic Buildings and Houses of Mason County. A review of the Mason County News from 1886 through 1950 provided a significant amount of previously unknown details, as well as changes to multiple buildings over the years. Consequently, some of the original articles were extensively rewritten to incorporate newly obtained information. The Historical Commission also created a section documenting the histories of 180 additional historic houses. As the compilers of the original book wrote in their Foreword, "We sincerely hope that it will contribute to the enlightenment, education and entertainment of many people for years to come."
