Volume VIII is the first of two which cover the reign of Ivan IV ('the Terrible'). It covers the years up to 1560, which Karamzin saw as a positive period in Ivan's life. In his youth, power is dominated first by his mother, then by various Boyars. Later, Ivan marries, and asserts his power, assisted by trustworthy advisors. Later chapters feature a detailed account of the 1552 Siege of Kazan, a key moment in the history of Muscovy and Russia, along with the beginning of trading ties with England, and wars in the Baltic.
