A relationship can be an intelligence operation long before the target realizes it.Honey traps are commonly reduced to sex, hidden cameras, and blackmail. In reality, the most effective operations are often far more patient. They begin with attention, admiration, professional recognition, emotional intimacy, or the appearance of genuine love.Honey Trap examines how intelligence services identify vulnerable targets, engineer seemingly accidental encounters, manufacture compatibility, establish secrecy, and gradually convert private relationships into access, cooperation, and control.Drawing from documented historical cases, government records, court filings, declassified material, and contemporary reporting, Chris Cathey explores: - How diplomats, military personnel, intelligence officers, scientists, contractors, political staff, and other valuable targets are selected - The use of swallows, ravens, Romeos, access agents, and compromised handlers - How loneliness, ego, ambition, resentment, debt, desire, and isolation create operational openings - The progression from rapport and emotional investment to favors, tasking, compromise, and blackmail - Soviet, East German, Chinese, European, and modern digital relationship operations - Dating applications, fabricated recruiters, sextortion, deepfakes, and synthetic romantic identities - How institutions can recognize manufactured relationships before they become security breachesThis is not merely a collection of sensational spy stories. It is a structured examination of the psychology and tradecraft behind relationship-based intelligence operations. The central lesson is simple: The trap is not always the photograph, the hotel room, or the threat. Sometimes the trap is the relationship itself.
