In Cameroon, amid a challenging economic and political context, waste management remains a major problem in large urban centers. The objective of this research is to analyze household waste management and hygiene in urban areas by observing household activities within the domestic space. A variety of practices and individual rationales can be observed, which depend on the relationship to waste shaped by socioeconomic status, biomedical and cultural knowledge regarding risk, the ecological conditions of the individual's living environment, neighborhood infrastructure, and so on. This body of findings on individual practices and the modalities of public management-which I studied through the "Cleanest Municipality of Yaoundé" contest-highlights the difficulties in fostering interaction among stakeholders and between them and the general public, especially at the intersection of complex fields such as the environment and health.
