Hug Lady

One Woman, 500,000 Hugs. A Legacy of Love. For over a decade, the runway at Fort Hood, Texas, witnessed an extraordinary ritual. Rain or shine, at noon or at two in the morning, a tiny woman stood waiting for every deploying and returning soldier. Her name was Elizabeth Laird, but to the hundreds of thousands of military personnel shipping off to war, she was known simply as "The Hug Lady."What started in 2003 as a simple handshake quickly snowballed into a sacred military tradition. For anxious soldiers far from home, she was the last warm embrace before entering a combat zone, and the very first set of open arms welcoming them back to American soil. Armed with words of faith and pocket-sized Psalm 91 cards, Elizabeth delivered more than 500,000 hugs-becoming an anchor of hope during America's longest conflicts. But when Elizabeth faced her own final battle with cancer, the ultimate role reversal occurred. The very troops she comforted broke ranks to storm her hospital room, returning the love, prayers, and hugs to the woman who had always held them close. The Hug Lady is the deeply moving, true story of an Air Force veteran, grandmother, and unsung American hero. It is a powerful testament to patriotism, faith, and the revolutionary power of a single act of kindness.
