According to epistemologists, the word "environnement" began to appear in the French language as early as 1265. It is, however, polysemic in nature and has several meanings. In French scientific literature, researchers most often used the term "milieu." According to two dictionaries, the term "environment" is likely a "loanword" from English and became established in the French language beginning in the second half of the twentieth century. Indeed, around the middle of the twentieth century, a team of researchers led by K. Mather (1949; 1961) conducted remarkable research at the University of Cambridge in England to establish a partition based on quantitative modeling of genetic effects in the individual. Such a partition of measurable effects isolates the quantified effects of the environment on the morphogenetic development of the individual in question.
