Nowadays, people are often frustrated in their search for meaning. Our affluent society and the welfare state satisfy practically all our needs - except for one: the need for meaning. For the sake of finding such meaning, people are even prepared to suffer, should it be necessary. If one takes a look inside a psychotherapist's practice, very few of the patients one meets there are in genuine external distress. It is therefore clear that people do not find the meaning of their lives like a chest of gold on a treasure hunt; rather, it is by thinking and acting consciously that they give meaning to their existence in the first place.
