I am a Bald Eagle

What does a young Bald Eagle see when it looks down at a rushing river? The storm has passed, but the river is fast and muddy. Somewhere beneath the glare and swirling current, a fish is waiting. River-Young-a juvenile Bald Eagle still mottled brown and years away from the famous white head and tail-must learn to find it. He watches. He dives. He misses. Then he watches again.Children can understand far more than we sometimes expect. I Am a Bald Eagle: Learning to Fish the River doesn't shrink nature science to fit an arbitrary idea of what young children are "ready" to know. Instead, it gives curious young minds real biology through story, rich language, and illustrations designed to make big ideas understandable-and fascinating. As River-Young learns to fish, young readers discover how an eagle uses light, current, rocks, and eddies to search the water below. They learn how powerful talons grip slippery fish, how a Bald Eagle's wings can stretch six to seven feet across, why young eagles look so different from adults, and how positioning the sun behind them can reduce glare on the water.Along the riverbank, a child named Kenji-with cardboard wings, a red scarf, and binoculars-mirrors the young eagle's discoveries through imaginative play. Their parallel adventures turn patience, mistakes, careful observation, and perseverance into part of learning how a wild bird survives.Part of the I Am a Wild Bird series, I Am a Bald Eagle: Learning to Fish the River blends lyrical storytelling with real-world science for children who are ready to wonder, question, and understand more than we often give them credit for. Back matter includes additional Bald Eagle facts for young readers who want to keep exploring.Look closely. A muddy river holds more than you can see at first glance.Because your child's mind isn't common.
