I've been to Dalarna! - Dalarna as Sweden's ideal landscape

'I've been to Dalarna!' - Many artists, clergymen, scholars and writers, such as Frederik Barfod, travelled to Sweden to discover Dalarna. The appeal of this province in central Sweden is no passing fad. Even before Bullerbü and Pippi Longstocking's Småland, Dalarna was regarded for centuries as the archetype of Sweden. This book describes how the portrayal of Dalarna has changed in comparison with the popular scientific research discourse. The first part characterises the Swedish 'ideal landscape' during its 'heyday' in the 19th century in terms of landscape, history, economy, population, culture and tourism. The second part provides a literary-historical classification of travel literature and examines two German and two Danish travel accounts. Ernst Moritz Arndt's *Journey through Sweden in the Year 1804* (1806), Friedrich Wilhelm von Schubert's *Journey through Sweden, Norway, Lapland, Finland and Ingria in the Years 1817, 1818 and 1820* (1823/24), Hans Christian Andersen's *I Sverrig* (1851) and Frederik Barfod's *En Rejse i Dalarne* (1863) have immortalised Dalarna.
