Immigrants in Britain during the Long Nineteenth Century: A Documentary History of Realities and Perceptions: Volume IV: Racism

This volume of primary sources examines the whole range of hostile feeling to which nineteenth century settlers found themselves subjected. It explores some of the legislation which attempted to exclude foreigners focusing on nationality and immigration control. Making particular use of the experience of Germans during the First World War, the volume also demonstrates the way in which the state could persecute aliens. The volume also reproduces racist discourse from newspaper and periodical publications, as well as books. It further outlines the existence of xenophobic organizations through newspaper articles and official reports of riots which took place against immigrants throughout the period. Accompanied by introductions and annotations written by the editor, this volume will be of great interest to students of British and World History.
