In Heaven: Dante's Divine Journey

Dante has passed beyond the darkness below and the difficult mountain of cleansing, but the greatest part of his journey still waits above. Guided by Beatrice, he rises through a universe of shining spheres where souls appear as living lights, ancient rulers speak of justice and ambition, saints reveal the meaning of wisdom and sacrifice, and every step draws him farther from the familiar world he once knew. As Dante ascends through the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the stars beyond, Heaven becomes stranger, brighter, and more overwhelming. He meets emperors, warriors, philosophers, apostles, and members of his own family, hears a prophecy that will shape the rest of his earthly life, and begins to understand that the order of the universe reaches far beyond human judgment. Yet every answer leads to another mystery, and even Beatrice can guide him only so far. At last, Dante approaches the highest realm, where time, distance, and ordinary sight begin to lose their meaning. Surrounded by vast circles of light and souls gathered in perfect joy, he prepares for a final vision that no human language can fully contain. After traveling farther than any living man could hope to go, will Dante finally understand the love that holds all creation together?
