In the Trenches of Change: A Field Memoir Reform, Culture, and Consequences

Change is never just a plan. It's trust, trade-offs, and consequences.Steven Kelly and Mari Novak take you inside the real work of reform - where intent collides with culture, power, and politics. Over four decades, they worked alongside ministries learning democracy, organizations rebuilding after communism, and developmental programs fighting bureaucracy and inertia - often under-resourced, under pressure, and rarely controlling the forces at play.Told with candor, wit, and hard-earned humility, these stories reveal what never makes it into policy: - why "best practices" fail when incentives don't change- how culture and power shape possibility- how unintended consequences disrupt systems- what helps when rules keep shiftingIf you've ever tried to fix a broken organization, lead change, or make a difference in a complex world, this memoir will sharpen how you see the work - and raise your appreciation of what it demands.
