In recent years, India has gained in profile and influence in international politics. In its search for new scope for action and partners, the regional context has become increasingly important, particularly since the early 1990s, as reflected in India's heightened engagement in South Asia. This paper analyses India's ambitions as a regional power and its role in South Asia. The theoretical framework for this analysis is the concept of the 'regional leading power', which emerged from the German research debate.
