Informal sector activities and poverty reduction in Kankan

Informal sector activities: an alternative means of reducing household poverty in the urban municipality of Kankan is the subject of this paper. The authors began with the observation that, in the urban municipality of Kankan, the local population engages in a range of informal sector activities, from which they derive a significant proportion of their income. Based on this observation, the research question was to demonstrate the contribution of this sector to poverty reduction - despite its exclusion from national accounts - in order to better assess its impact. This led to the formulation of the following working hypothesis: Activities in the informal sector (sewing, embroidery, hairdressing, carpentry and mechanics) are likely to have a positive impact on reducing household poverty. To test this assumption in practice, the overall objective of the research was to generate knowledge about activities in the informal sector with a view to highlighting their contribution to reducing household poverty.
