Insecurity and Victimization: The Importance of Local Diagnosis

Today's cities include areas that, over time, have given rise to spaces that seem to provide conditions conducive to crime and victim vulnerability. Therefore, community analysis is essential for rethinking effective policing measures, because they are locally contextualized. The police refer to the city (polis), where it is important to maintain order, define and regulate roles, manage morality, obedience to rules, health, and guarantee supply. For effective police action, as the United Nations points out, factors such as social, local, and situational crime prevention, the adoption of resocialization programs, and their scientific support must be taken into account. Thus, a local security assessment was developed in an urban community, and the results revealed a perception of increased crime, drug trafficking, and the need for policing. It is important for the police to be more attuned to the problems and needs of the population, developing programs that inform, involve, and make them jointly responsible for security.
