Instrumental music making from a neuroscientific perspective: practice in brain research

Studies conducted with the help of musicians formed the basis for various brain research projects. Musicians usually begin playing music before the age of seven. For this reason, clear differences in the brain can be seen compared to non-musicians. In musicians, the left and right hemispheres of the brain are more strongly connected. In addition, certain areas of the brain are enlarged. Based on these findings, researchers began to study error analysis. Experts were interested in the question of what processes take place in the brain when mistakes are made while playing music. The results were as astonishing as they were groundbreaking for the practice of musicians and for teaching. Researchers discovered that the brain notices a mistake seventy milliseconds before it occurs. The brain can also assess the importance of the mistake. Incorrect or error-free practice can lead to brain errors. Incorrect error behaviour has negative effects on the body. These manifest themselves in the form of fear of failure and other neuroscientific symptoms.
