From its formation in 1960 to 1979, the competition was contested over a two legged tie; from 1980 until 2004 the competition was contested over a single match held in Japan. The last winner of the cup was Portuguese side Porto, defeating Colombian side Once Caldas in a penalty shootout in 2004.
