Set in 1875, in a small town of Greenville, California, a former slave and union soldier now farmer, Matthew Washington, comes across a Chinese woman named Li Mei. She's desperate for help as her brother had died and she needs food and housing. Feeling bad, he offers her help and takes her back to his small farm outside of town. Upon seeing his small one room house, Li Mei asks if Matthew has a wife and he says that the town has no African American women he could marry.
