Inventory of the Taken

This Halloween, Salem is selling its past. The past has started keeping receipts. Maeve Vance knows when an object is wrong. At Bellweather, an elegant Salem boutique, she has learned to contain the rare supernatural objects she calls Returns-objects marked by ash, impossible cold, and sometimes far worse. Then a tourist buys a silver crescent necklace. Within hours, the woman is freezing inside an overheated hotel room. Her name begins vanishing from records. Photographs erase her. Even her husband starts forgetting pieces of who she is. Soon Maeve discovers the same pattern across Salem: ordinary merchandise precisely recreating possessions taken from Salem-area households during the witch-trial era. Every purchase gives the past a new owner to claim. As Halloween crowds flood the city, Maeve traces the objects to a missing historical inventory-and to secrets buried inside Bellweather itself. Then Maeve's nineteen-year-old niece becomes the next name on the list. To save her, Maeve must discover what the past is counting before the account is complete
