The railways in the Isle of Wight have always had a character of their own, undoubtedly because of their physical isolation from the rest of the British railway system. Their history was complex and the Isle of Wight has always been the home of old engines and coaches. Yet in the summer season the Island railways carried heavy traffic, more akin to that of a suburban railway. With the remaining line now electrified, but a steam preservation scheme already established in the island, Isle of Wight Album recalls scenes on the Island railways during the previous 104 years of steam traction to arouse memories of the past and stimulate expectation for the future.
