Jeepney!

The jeepney starts and stops, starts and stops, carrying a little boy with his mother to the market. A passenger's box slips out of her hands and bumps the little boy's toy jeepney out of his hand, and so the saga begins as a little boy's morning bus ride turns into a story of lost and found. With a bright collage jeepney on every page and ink sketched crowds of people, Susan L. Roth captures the vibrancy of city life in the Philippines. With an ordinary event that could happen to any child, her story warmly recognizes how a toy can be the lifeline between a child and their absent parent, taken overseas by work. Thanks to the translation by Leo Altarejos, Jr., the story is published as a bilingual facing page edition in English and Tagalog, and so reflects the lived experience of Filipino families who straddle the Pacific.
