Joe Ushie: Critical Perspectives

The poetry of Joe Ushie has recently been the subject of a number of critical reviews. From winning the 2018 Shehu Sani/Association of Nigerian Authors Poetry Prize for his book of poetry Yawns and Belches (2018) to being shortlisted for the Nigeria Prize for Literature (NLNG), Ushie, a poet and Bette-Bendi scholar from Akwa Ibom State Nigeria, has given readers of Nigerian and African literature ample reason to find in his work relevant language, imagery, and style worth reading for aesthetic value and representative characteristics. His work draws on indigenous lore and the environment of Nigeria's Niger Delta region to provide useful insights into the Nigerian/African experience through an imaginative hub incorporating nature's images and social justice to relay messages that are closely related to political periods from the 1990s to the present.
