He is the son of the noted jurist Geoffrey Lawrence, 1st Baron Oaksey. He prefers to be called Oaksey although Trevethin is the longer-established title. He was educated at Eton College, New College, Oxford and Yale University. At age 16 he spent the summer attending the Nuremberg Trials at which his father was officiating, the family diaries and memoires of which are now on permanent loan to the NCCL Galleries of Justice in Nottingham
