Jeffrey Jordan grew up in luxury and privilege in Rawlings, Washington, as a member of a prominent family and the nephew of the town's founder. He attended Washington State College but found that liquor and women suited his desires more than studying. When his parents discovered that he had been squandering the money they sent for tuition and room rent, they refused to pay any more and wrote him out of their will.In desperation to escape some loan sharks, he joined the army and was forced to serve as an ambulance driver during the First World War.
