Jung Revival

The current meaning-crisis in the West may account for the recent surge of interest in the theories of Carl Jung. Terms such as the collective unconscious and the shadow have long been familiar, but the spiritual underpinnings of Jung's psychology remain poorly understood. Jung was profoundly influenced by the occult phenomena which he experienced from childhood and the system he created sought to explain such encounters psychologically. The result, Analytical Psychology, presents an overarching framework which aims to fuse scientific thought with both Christianity and the occult. Author and biblical scholar, Mike Taylor, meticulously traces the development of Jung's ideas, drawing on original German sources and recently published material, to assess the success of Jung's project. Taylor makes a compelling case that Jungian psychology is fundamentally incompatible with biblical Christianity due to unreconcilable differences in their ideological underpinnings. Furthermore, he argues that Jung's attempt to psychologize the occult has allowed it to subtly permeate Western culture.
