Juvenile detention facilities:: An educational prison model that diverges from traditional standards

Since the Law of September 9, 2002, the prison system for young offenders has expanded with the creation of juvenile detention centers. These modern facilities coexist with juvenile wings and aim to care for incarcerated youth within a less restrictive yet still strict prison environment, while placing a central emphasis on educational programs. In addition to separation from adults, the incarceration of minors reflects a desire to balance punitive and educational approaches. However, many facilities operating under this dual approach have ended in failure. These new prisons nevertheless aim to serve as true educational prisons, where the detention regime is primarily focused on the young inmate's eventual release. After several years of operation, the results of these "model prisons" have been quite mixed. In practice, this educational priority tends to undermine prison security requirements, raising questions about their institutional functioning as well as the experiences of the young people incarcerated there.
