After earning a degree from King's College, Cambridge, he came to India in 1920 to teach at Lucknow University. There, he met Mrs. Monica Devi, his spiritual guru. When she moved to Banaras, he joined Banaras Hindu University. In 1928, following his guru's renunciation, he became a monk and took the name Shri Krishna Prem. He lived in Almora for two years, supporting himself by alms, and helped build a Radha-Krishna temple in Mirtola. After his guru's death in 1944, he became the ashram's chief caretaker. In 1948, Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi praised him as a blend of knowledge and devotion. Known as "Gopal-da," he passed away in 1965.
