Bol Kiki and Rufus are baking cookies with Ubel Owl when one ingredient raises a surprising question: was salt really once used as money? Before they know it, they are standing in a busy Roman marketplace, where salt is earned, guarded, and traded. Because it is useful, it takes a lot of time and effort to produce, and it has value. Kiki and Rufus even become real salt guards themselves and discover how special a handful of salt can be. But when more and more animals begin collecting and making salt, everything changes. What was once scarce and valuable becomes so common that nobody wants it anymore. An adventurous children's book about scarcity, value, and why more is not always better. Kiki & Rufus - Salt of the Romans makes economics and the history of money easy to understand for children ages 6 to 12.
