Bol The Title 'Kiria Anna' represents Anna's struggle in life to improve herself. In Greek 'Kiria' means 'Mrs', but depending on context, it can also be used as a term of respect roughly translated as 'Lady'. The novel 'Kiria Anna' is based on the true story of an extraordinary girl born on 5th February 1920 in Pretori, in the district of Paphos, Cyprus and is told in a simple style as this is how Anna would have told her story. Her passion to succeed in life drove her to leave the comfort of her family and village life and go to work in the town of Limassol at the age of nine. By the age of eighteen she fell deeply in love and against her family's warnings and her father's threat to use his shotgun, she married a year later. The illiterate Anna embarked on a sea voyage to London in 1948 not knowing what the future held, or the problems and heartaches that were to follow. She simply looked forward to a bright new life in the country where she had heard "the streets were paved with gold". Her religious beliefs helped her through many traumatic life experiences as she fought to keep up the Greek traditions with her two Anglicized rebellious daughters, while having to deal with a husband addicted to gambling.A difficult unhappy childhood followed by romance, heartache and ambitions to succeed, is told against the background of the Cyprus political problems. It gives an insight into village life and Greek traditions and also challenges faced by early immigrants.
