Kloa Plantation Days: A tale of sugar cultivation and community on Kaua'i

Kloa Plantation Days - Talk Story In the summer of 1985, The Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association had constructed a monument to Sugar in Kloa, Kaua'i and made plans to hold a Sesquicentennial parade and luau to celebrate 150 years of Hawai'i being the Sugar Islands. It was later decided that a book would be commissioned to tell visitors and local descendants why we celebrate. It would be called Kloa Plantation Days, A Talk Story. The story would be told by locals and immigrants who came to work on the plantations. The book starts with Captain James Cook and crews passing by the islands in 1778 on his way to search for a Northwest Passage. It tells how this discovery would change the lives of the Kanaka who lived on the islands. The Missionaries who brought Christianity to Hawai'i are discussed in detail along various other facets of the society. This is their story. The book contains numerous photos old and new to illustrate the activities.
