The 196 member countries of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change succeeded in adopting a historic, universal agreement after two weeks of intense negotiations. The agreement, which entered into force on November 4, 2016, aims to limit global warming by the end of this century to well below 2°C while pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C. Each Party shall formulate, communicate, and update successive nationally determined contributions that it intends to achieve. The Parties shall take domestic mitigation measures to achieve the objectives of these contributions. Algeria's provisional NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) was designed taking into account the particularly difficult financial and economic situation Algeria is currently facing, due to the significant drop in hydrocarbon prices. Algeria intends to position itself as a major player in electricity generation from solar photovoltaics and wind power facilities, which will serve as the drivers of sustainable economic development.
