La gazza ladra è un melodramma in due atti di Gioachino Rossini su libretto di Giovanni Gherardini, rappresentato per la prima volta alla Scala di Milano nel 1817. La vicenda si svolge in un villaggio francese. Ninetta, serva affettuosa e onesta in casa del fittavolo Fabrizio Vingradito, è promessa sposa a Giannetto, figlio dei padroni. Il padre di Ninetta, Fernando, è un militare disertore in fuga che si nasconde nel villaggio. Una gazza addomesticata ruba posate d'argento dalla casa; quando Ninetta vende un cucchiaio con le iniziali "FV" per aiutare il padre, viene accusata del furto e condannata a morte. Il podestà Gottardo, invaghito di lei, approfitta della situazione per tentare di sposarla, mentre Giannetto e la famiglia sono disperati.Nel secondo atto Ninetta, in prigione, rifiuta le avances del podestà e protegge il padre. Fernando si costituisce per salvarla, ma la sentenza sembra irrevocabile. La gazza, rubando ancora una moneta a Pippo, rivela il proprio nido dove sono nascoste le posate rubate. L'innocenza di Ninetta viene provata all'ultimo momento, prima dell'esecuzione. Tutti si riconciliano: Ninetta sposa Giannetto, Fernando è graziato, e il podestà viene umiliato. A tame magpie steals silver cutlery from the house; when Ninetta sells a spoon bearing the initials 'FV' to help her father, she is accused of theft and sentenced to death. The podestà, Gottardo, who is infatuated with her, takes advantage of the situation to try to marry her, whilst Giannetto and his family are in despair.In the second act, Ninetta, in prison, rejects the podestà's advances and protects her father. Fernando turns himself in to save her, but the sentence seems irrevocable. The magpie, stealing another coin from Pippo, reveals its nest where the stolen cutlery is hidden. Ninetta's innocence is proven at the very last moment, just before the execution. Everyone is reconciled: Ninetta marries Giannetto, Fernando is pardoned, and the podestà is humiliated. The opera concludes with a choral happy ending that celebrates justice and goodness triumphing over deceit and injustice.
