I was ten months old when my parents accepted an invitation in 1946 to go to Cuba and lead the effort to establish an agricultural school for rural youth in a remote area of the island along its eastern coast. The Methodist Board of Missions had acquired 300 acres of abandoned sugarcane land from a large corporation to establish Escuela Agrícola e Industrial (EAI), and for the next fifteen years this became our home-a magical place far out in the countryside, where my four siblings and I grew up, surrounded by teenage rural students living on campus as well as local workers from nearby impoverished communities.
