Mathilde, a young Alsatian, falls in love with Amine Belhaj, a Moroccan officer in service of the French Army at the end of World War II. The two marry and settle near Meknès, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, on a remote yard that Amine inherited from his father. As he tries to defy the rocky soil a barren yield, Mathilde raises the two children. Full of freedom she had dared to break into a new, unknown life and must soon have sobering experiences: the everyday racism of the French colonial society, in which a marriage between an Arab and a French is not provided, the patriarchal traditions of the locals, the Union Cunderstanding of your own M. annes. But Mathilde doesn't give up. She struggles for recognition and her life in the land of others
