Bol Land of Myth and Memory - A Poetic Portrait of Greek IdentityHow did a recognisable Greek world survive more than two thousand years of conquest, religious change, political fracture, and the disappearance of the states that once sheltered it, yet remain connected to its past? Land of Myth and Memory explores the history and cultural memory of Greece through a sequence of poems spanning deep geological time, the emergence of human memory and imagination, Greek myth and sacred landscape, the flowering of philosophy and enquiry, the coming of Christianity, and the long centuries of Roman, eastern Roman, and Ottoman rule before the threshold of the Greek Revolution. Rather than offering a conventional chronological history, the book asks how a recognisably Greek world could take shape and remain connected to an exceptionally deep past. It follows the growth of that world through place and belonging, spoken and written Greek, enquiry into the natural world and human life, and the spread of Christianity into the Greek-speaking world. The landscape of mountains, islands, fractured coasts, caves, springs, and seas forms the beginning. Myth gives meaning to an uncertain world. Tragedy confronts fate, suffering, and responsibility. Philosophy turns inherited answers into questions. Greek speech carries memory across generations, while writing allows words to endure, be recovered, and be read again. Christianity becomes deeply embedded within Greek-speaking communities and adds another enduring form of belonging. The book then turns to how that world could survive through centuries of fracture. Place, spoken language, written language, and faith become central to maintaining continuity with the past despite continual change. The Greek world is repeatedly tested. It is absorbed into Rome; the Roman world divides and turns east; the eastern Roman state contracts and falls; eastern and western Christianity draw apart; and Greek-speaking Orthodox communities continue under Ottoman rule. Nothing survives unchanged. Yet enough remains for later generations still to recognise the past as theirs and, eventually, for revolution to become imaginable and increasingly possible. Combining poetry with historical and interpretative notes, Land of Myth and Memory is not simply a history of Greece in verse. It is an exploration of cultural continuity: how a people may remain connected to their past even as what they carry and the world around them change.
