Bol Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER) was originally described as a theoretical concept by Albert Einstein in 1917, but it was not until 1954 that the first "stimulated" emissions of microwave radiation (MASER) were generated by J.P. Gordon and C.H. Townes at Bell Laboratories. The concept of periodontal treatment has radically changed over the past decades from a very aggressive surgical approach of pocket elimination to a conservative treatment. The treatment objective today is just removing the periodontal disease causing agents. Regarding this aspect the use of lasers in periodontal treatment may be the next step towards a more conservative treatment. Although lasers have been used in periodontal therapy for 10 or more years, clinicians have barely begun to tap the enormous potential of this form of therapy. The relative lack of pain, ease of use, and site specificity of the laser make it an ideal addition to the periodontist's armamentarium. Applications now are being developed for a broader range of wavelengths that will offer useful, predictable, and comfortable therapy for managing the periodontal patient.
