Last and First Men: A Story of the Near Far Future

Last and First Men by Olaf Stapledon is an epic "future history" novel that describes the evolution of humanity over two billion years and eighteen distinct species, from our own 'First Men' to the final, hyper-advanced 'Eighteenth Men'.This classic of science fiction presents a sweeping, philosophical narrative of humanity's journey through the ages. It explores how different human species rise to the heights of civilization and then descend back into savagery, constantly developing new forms, senses, and intellectual abilities in their struggle to survive a changing cosmos. The story, which reads more like a future history book than a traditional character-driven novel, anticipates concepts like genetic engineering and the 'group mind'.It is a thought-provoking and imaginative work that challenges readers to reflect on the nature of human existence and the species' ultimate destiny in the universe.
