Bol “Latter-Day Pamphlets finds Thomas Carlyle in fierce prophetic flood, denouncing the social and political ills of his day, from parliamentary democracy to abolitionism. This meticulously curated edition includes manuscript drafts along with both versions of an ancillary essay, the notorious ‘Occasional Discourse.’ An introduction explores the work’s contentious reception and its later uptake by socialist thinkers.”—Ian Duncan, University of California, Berkeley The final volume of the Norman and Charlotte Strouse Edition of the Writings of Thomas Carlyle, Latter-Day Pamphlets, situates the Victorian philosopher, social critic, and essayist’s most contentious works within the social context of mid-nineteenth-century crises, including the revolutions of 1848, the Irish potato famine, and debates over slavery in the United States. Featuring the titular work of the Latter-Day Pamphlets, in addition to two versions of his infamous essay in support of slavery, “Occasional Discourse,” this volume will be published in two parts. Part 1 features the introductory materials as well as the full text of “Latter-Day Pamphlets.” Part 2 includes the two versions of “Occasional Discourse,” as well as the works cited, textual apparatus, and index. In keeping with the other volumes in the series, these pamphlets and essays are accompanied by a thorough historical introduction to the material, extensive notes providing historical and cultural context while expanding on references and allusions, and a textual apparatus that carefully details and explains the editorial decisions made in reconciling the editions of each text.
