Bol Corruption is generally defined as the misuse of public office for private gain. However, in African societies, this definition appears inadequate because it is based on Western concepts rooted in a strict separation between the public and private spheres. The study shows that practices labeled as corruption often occur within a context of normative pluralism where state, customary, religious, and community norms coexist. Certain illegal practices may thus be socially legitimate when they fulfill obligations of solidarity or redistribution.Corruption is analyzed as a systemic phenomenon linked to the history of the postcolonial state, clientelist logic, institutional weakness, and informal mechanisms of social regulation. The ineffectiveness of anti-corruption policies stems from the disconnect between the formal legality of norms and their weak social legitimacy. The research argues that an effective fight against corruption requires moving beyond purely repressive approaches and rethinking the law based on African social realities.
