This book begins from a simple but frequently ignored premise: that leadership is not only a political function but a psychological one, and that we cannot understand why leaders govern as they do without understanding who they are, what shaped their convictions, and what, if left unresolved, continues to drive their conduct in office. This book aims to encourage leaders, those aspiring, those who study, advise, and elect them, to look beyond manifestos and party affiliations, and to actively cultivate and embody the values that elevate the standard of behaviour expected in public life. It argues that the health of a nation's governance is inseparable from the psychological and ideological health of the people who govern it, and that two forces in particular deserve far closer attention than they typically receive: ideology and mental health.
