Life is like California

California shakes, burns, dries out, and grows back. So does a life.In ten short chapters, Life is like California draws one plain lesson from each of the state's defining facts. The fault line teaches that stability is not stillness, but the ability to move with what moves. Fire season teaches that what burns clears the way for what grows. Drought teaches you to plan in the wet years for the dry ones. The redwoods teach that the tallest trees hold each other up by the roots. A city block where a dozen languages are spoken teaches that difference is the engine, not the friction. The gold rush, the edge of the continent, the coastal fog, the unglamorous farming valley, and the state's standing permission to begin again each hand over a lesson of their own.Short enough to read in one sitting and built to be returned to, this is a gift book for graduations, new jobs, hard seasons and fresh starts - for anyone standing on ground that will not hold still.
