Tax Lists are a unique way to help the genealogists sort out and hunt down those elusive ancestors. Tax list can be looked at as another type of odd year census. These lists can contain: (1) names of masters & mistresses (head of household) of farms or overseers where there was no master or mistress; (2) names of white servants, sometimes called "other whites" or "sons"; (3) wives, sons, or daughters of the head of household are sometimes indicated; (4) free mulattoes, who often have surnames; sometimes free mulattoes are listed in their own household, without whites; (5) names of Negro males 16 years old and older; (6) names of Negro males under 16 years old, sometimes called Negro boys; & (7) names of Negro women (of any age). All the lists sworn before a justice do not survive. Some of these lists are more than one page laminated together.
