In 1988 the Tate Gallery Liverpool opened in a warehouse on the Albert Dock, converted by St James Stirling. The Gallery was an immediate success, attracting more than 500,000 visitors each year and achieving national recognition for its exhibitions of modern art and exciting visitors' programmes.
