LIVING ON A VOLCANO: HUMANITY AND VOLCANIC RISKS

Mitigating the impacts of volcanic eruptions and identifying and improving the resilience of high-risk communities is increasingly recognized as a societal priority. In the past, society has tended to be reactive rather than proactive when it comes to volcanic eruptions and their subsequent disasters. To minimize and mitigate the disasters caused by eruptions, it is necessary to assess both the hazard (e.g. identifying the areas likely to be affected by volcanic hazards, and the severity of the hazards) and how society can best respond to the hazard and the resulting impact. This book covers all aspects of volcanic hazards, from a scientific, societal and psychological point of view, accompanied by recent examples of problems linked to risk prevention during recent eruptions and the management of crisis situations in different contexts.
