Museums, as places for the preservation and transmission of cultural heritage, are synonymous with intellectual and cultural democratization, enabling every citizen to broaden their horizons and acquire a range of knowledge with the sole aim of empowering themselves. Since the decentralization reforms, local governments have truly established themselves as key players in the museum sector, both in their management and in the acquisition and maintenance of museum collections. Museums thus contribute to the influence and cultural richness of their regions. The state quickly established itself as both the regulatory framework and a partner in this public cultural policy. Nevertheless, with the crisis in local finances, new stakeholders and new sources of private funding have emerged, notably to compensate for the shortfall in public initiative. The challenge today is to preserve the primary purpose of museums-namely, as places of knowledge and personal enrichment-while addressing current issues that prompt us to consider what form of management is most appropriate for ensuring effective museum policy.
