Bol Partner ISBN 0 7153 7332 3 Long distance paths of England and Wales. T.G. Millar This is the first book to bring together all the long distance paths now open for public recreation. Coming at a time when walking for enjoyment is an increasing pastime, it covers in detail the 1500 miles of countryside encompassed by the eight paths – Pennine Way, Pembrokeshire Coast Path, South West Peninsula Coast Path, Offa’s Dyke, Cleveland Way, North and South Downs Ways, and the Ridgeway – and provides a perfect armchair introduction to the pleasures of long distance walking. The paths pass through extremely beautiful countryside, including National Parks and designated areas of outstanding natural beauty. Formed, in the main, along continuous rights of way, away from roads, they are usually suitable for walkers all ages and ability. Some, however, offer a challenge to the hardier hiker, whilst others are also part bridleway. Each of the routes is fully described by Mr. Millar, an ex-head of the Long Distance Path branch of the Countryside Commission, who thus has an intimate knowledge of all the ground covered. After a general appreciation of the area concerned, he gives a step by step guide to the main sections of each path, pinpointing such fields of interest as natural human history, geology and architecture. Special attention is paid throughout to practical matters like route-finding and difficult terrain. Early chapters deal with the origins and character of the path as a whole. These give advice on preparation, accommodation, sign-posting, weather conditions and hazards. Some possible future routes are described, and there is a section on how long distance paths are planned and made. A useful map of each path is included, with 80 photographs and line drawings illustrating typical scenery and specific points of interest. More information is given in a detailed bibliography and an appendix of useful addresses, all adding up to an essential guide for anyone interested in walking and our heritage. Contents among others; What are Long Distance Paths? Using the Long Distance Paths The Pennine Way The Pembrokeshire Coast Path The South West Peninsula Coast Path The Offa’s Dyke Path The Cleveland Way The South Downs Way The North Downs Way The Ridgeway More Long Distance Paths? Creating a Long Distance Path Appendix – Useful Addresses Bibliography Index
