Spain at the crossroads: rebirth, transformation or disappearance This book, written by Alejandro Macarrón and Miguel Platón, issues a warning that is as clear as it is disturbing: the Spanish population is shrinking and aging rapidly, with no generational replacement and massive immigration that does not solve the problem and entails obvious risks. With a rigorous approach, documented and backed by compelling data and graphs, this work analyzes with precision and historical perspective the decline of the native Spanish population and its progressive replacement by a foreign population, a large part of which comes from countries with religious and cultural values very different from those that have defined Spain for centuries, or from societies with much higher levels of crime than ours, and which includes many people from a country that claims part of Spanish territory for itself. The book is a lucid journey through the factors that have brought us to this point: the free fall in the birth rate since shortly after Franco's death, widespread family breakdown, and the massive and uncontrolled arrival of immigrants--the vast majority of whom are unskilled--even though there is very high unemployment in Spain. Are we prepared for a Spain that, in just one generation, will no longer recognize itself, as is already the case in many towns? Do we want to become a multicultural amalgam with no common identity and a very aging population? Despite the dramatic nature of the diagnosis, the underlying message is hopeful. Spain still has room to react, to recover decent birth rates, promote family stability, and organize its immigration policy in the national interest. The authors, with data, history, and common sense, not only show the problem: they point the way out. But time is running out. If we Spaniards do not wake up now, tomorrow may be too late.
